As per several sources, the Steelers have signed fifth-round pick Dennis Dixon to a three-year contract that includes a $130,000 signing bonus.
Also, don't make too much of the Rooney family's shifting of some of the team's stock. This is something that has been coming for some time now as the NFL works to remove itself from any kind of gambling.
The family itself doesn't want to divest itself of its race tracks or the football team. You won't see the team sold to an outside source anytime soon - if ever.
I'm not so sure that Dan Rooney's siblings agree with you Dale. According to J.J. Cooper's blog at fanhouse.com he states: "Update: The WSJ story has been updated to say that some of the other Rooney sons are balking at Dan's offer, and may listen to an outside buyer. The news is getting worse for Steelers fans."
ReplyDeleteNever say never.
Los Angeles Steelers, here we come!
ReplyDeleteSo, JJ Cooper knows more than Dale, who covers the Steelers daily?
ReplyDeleteThis rumor has been generated because the family is trying to a valuation for the franchise. They went to several banks for estimates.
The Steelers aren't going anywhere and no matter what happens, the Rooneys will still be running things. I have a hard time believing the other owners would allow a hostile takeover of the Steelers. And they have to approve any sale.
ReplyDeleteDale, I agree with you. I believe the Rooneys will maintain control of the Steelers for a long time.
ReplyDeleteThat said, the Rooneys are, first and foremost, businessmen. And ruthless ones at that. I'd also have to imagine that there's plenty of bad blood among the brothers, what with Dan firing Art Jr. and all. If an outside buyer can make an offer than Dan can't match, I wouldn't put it past them to take it.
The Rooneys are essentially one generation removed from the Irish mob. Business is business, as they say.
This might actually work out well for us. The Steelers will move to Los Angeles, and then we can get the Jaguars to move to Pittsburgh. They're the "New Steelers" already anyhow. Better O-line, better D-line, better running game...
ReplyDeleteWell, according to Junker, Crow and the rest of the yappers on WEAE and some financial analyst from CNBC:
ReplyDeleteThe Rooney siblings hate each other
Druckenmiller is another Mark Cuban
The Democrats are responsible because they won't renew the Bush administration tax cuts that are due to expire in 2010. They are forcing the Rooney siblings to sell to avoid a 28% (up from 15%) tax on inherited wealth.
I guess this is the nature of talk radio, plenty of uninformed opinion.
The Democrats are to blame? WTF.
ReplyDeleteLame....
I guess that's why Dan endorsed Obama. Jesus, can't I even go to a Sports blog without reading more of this GOP shit?
Anon, trust me, I rolled my eyes at that tax angle, too.
ReplyDeleteHey Mister Lolley....
ReplyDeleteMy sources tell me that the degenerate gambling brothers are linked to a filthy rich pig farmer from Mississippi who will buy out of the 30 year Heinz field lease and move them to Biloxi in the next 2 years. Them hillbillies think they are gonna coax Brett Favre out of retirement to be the QB until he's 50 by moving it next to his swamp down nair. The new team name "Biloxi Swamp Asses". This story has as much credibility as the nonsense you expect us to believe. You're as qualified as my back waxer, slapnuts!
Damn, Anonymous, that post was hilarious (though perhaps uncalled for). Biloxi Swamp Asses!
