Competition is never a bad thing and the Steelers added more Wednesday, signing six-year veteran Adrian Jones to a one-year deal.
Jones (6-4, 330) was originally drafted by the New York Jets in the fourth round (132nd overall) in the 2004 NFL Draft out of Kansas. Jones started 44 games for the Jets from 2004-07 before being waived late in the 2007 season. He was then signed by the Kansas City Chiefs and started 10 games in 2008 at guard. Jones then spent time last year in training camp with the Houston Texans before being released.
To make room for Jones on the roster, the Steelers placed veteran offensive tackle Willie Colon on their Reserve/Injured List. Colon suffered an Achilles injury last month and had season-ending surgery.
Jones will likely be used at right guard, giving the team another body there and some leverage in contract negotiations with first-round pick Maurkice Pouncey.
super bowl
ReplyDeletenobody likes an a**hole, patrick.
ReplyDeleteanyway, i guess this means essex is getting first dibs at RT.
kyle = super bowl, is really what i meant
ReplyDeletedon't rule out Ramon Foster or J. Scott.
or Tony Hills... oh wait, he sucks.
Patrick sucks at life
ReplyDeleteJust an option. Doesn't mean he won't be released later on
ReplyDeleteJones should start at LT then we can finally move Starks to RT
ReplyDeleteI consider Essex the frontrunner mainly due to experience but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Foster or J. Scott were starting week 1. I don't think Jones will be the starting RG but I think it's a sign that Essex won't be really in the running for that job.
ReplyDeleteHow weird is it that before Colon got hurt Essex was fighting an uphill battle to keep his starting RG spot but now he's a presumptive starter at tackle? Being a swingman has its perks.
The fact that this guy couldn't make the Texans and nobody wanted him last year after being waived tells me he's a stiff. So he can probably start on the Steelers' OL.
