Steelers hire Lake

The Steelers have filled the lone spot on their coaching staff by hiring Carnell Lake to coach defensive backs.

Lake, a five-time Pro Bowl player with the Steelers, replaces Ray Horton, who was hired as Arizona's defensive coordinator.

It's an interesting move in that Lake was always considered one of the more cerebral players when he was with the Steelers. He also holds the team record for sacks by a defensive back in one season.

  1. Dale - How likely do you thnk the Steelers are to draft Moore out of UCLA? I would imagine the Steelers have the inside track on Moore considering Lake was his position coach last year. Thanks.

  3. That's a really good point, Ron. Hadn't thought of that.

Kugler got one of his guys when he was hired albeit via free agency (Jonathan Scott)

Maybe Lake is awarded the same fortune. What do you think, Dale?

I wouldn't mind drafting rahim moore. Maybe his value is higher than our pick, but he's a pretty safe pick imo

would prefer a corner, but Moore is a great option

  5. Lake was only a College coach for one year...and that was 2009...he did not coach last year.

I love Lake...but I am not sure about this hire at this time.

Lake was not his position coach last year, but he was his sophmore year when he had 10 picks and was an absolute ball hawk! Get Rahim Moore. A replacement for Clark and can help out immediately in some dime packages.

  7. Mike Tomlin didn't have a whole lot of experience before becoming an NFL head coach and I would say he's managed rather well. Certainly Lake isn't on par with Tomlin but when you have "it" then the rest will come along. It's yet to be seen if Lake has "it" but I think Tomlin is a pretty good judge of the type of coaching he's looking for so I'm in support of this hire.

"Rahim Moore" was my first thought when I heard Lake was hired. Looks like Ron was on the same page.

  10. It certainly gives them plenty of insight about Moore. Whether that makes them more or less likely to draft him depends on his opinion of the kid.
