Day off for Steelers

The Steelers get a day off today but that doesn't mean the front office isn't working.

In addition to working on contract extensions for strong safety Troy Polamalu and linebacker LaMarr Woodley, the Steelers are also looking to re-work quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's deal.

If some of those aren't finished by Wednesday, the team may have to do some more cutting to get under the salary cap by the Thursday deadline.

© So Dennis Dixon wants to go somewhere he can be a starter.

I thought all his college eligibility was used up.

Dixon didn't come close to showing enough last season for any NFL team to think he's capable of being its starter.

© The Steelers have re-signed DT Chris Hoke.

We wont get nothing if we tried to trade him. We prolly have to pay someone to take him. Cause we pratically gave away a SB MVP receiver.

  2. i have a bad feeling about a long term deal with polo.

i hope tomlin got a kiss from plex and his agent before they left, because he was used ! very glad they did not sign him though. i like the young receiver corp here

I like Polo as much as any steeler fan but i wonder when the front office finds his replacement. Not saying Cut or replace Polo now. I mean several years down the road.

looks like there is going to be some good competition for the o-line.

i wish they brought in another corner instead of resigning gay, though maybe they couldn't afford it?

i don't miss having plax, but it would have been cool to have him in the redzone. the jets are asking a lot to have him walk in as a #2.

any idea on who the backup TE will be?

i never heard of an injury prone backup QB with marginal passing skills demanding a trade. i'm guessing being IR'd last season didn't sit well.

  5. I said all along that the wouldn't bring in a corner other than Gay. With the short time to prepare for the season, you couldn't expect someone to walk in off the street and pick up this defense quickly. Plus, Gay didn't have a bad season in 2010.

If there's an upgrade at CB this season, it will have to be Butler or Lewis beating out Gay.

Dale - how did Lewis look? He should be able to beat out Gay if he has learned some discipline

How much did Gay sign for? They could have dropped his tender and signed him for the minimum

Will they be re-signing Trai Essex? I always felt he looked good as a backup and he can play 4 spots on the line

  7. Essex sucks. Dale, do you see them bringing back either Starks or Flo?

    Starks and Flo suck

  9. Gay got a multi-year deal, so there's some committment there. Probably not too much, though.
I haven't seen enough of Lewis or Butler to form an opinion yet on how far they've come.

  10. I'd be shocked if Starks isn't back at some point. They needed the immediate cap relief his release gave them. He needed to get into better shape after not being able to work out in the offseason thanks to the neck injury.
I was told he had already lost 20 to 30 pounds when they let him go. In two more weeks, he should be getting closer to the target weight.
And remember, had they simply re-worked his deal, he wouldn't have been able to practice until Thursday anyway. He'll be back.

Good, having Starks back would be great for depth and my being uncomfortable with J. Scott for a whole season, despite his decent-ness at the end of last year.

Why not just let Dennis Dixon leave? Is he really going to "develop" into an NFL QB? If not, why not just grab some AJ Feely-type wandering around every August to be a 3rd string QB?

because dixon is a "known commodity" for the steelers.

  13. Dale,

Everything I've seen until this point had Gay receiving a one-year deal. Do you know the terms of his deal? Still waiting on your interesting rookie free agents or players that have caught your attention thus far.

It seems like RB Jonathon Dwyer is doing whatever he can to lose a roster spot. I think the Steelers RBs this year will end up being Mendy, Redman, Batch and M. Moore. If Clay and Dwyer can't pick up the blitz, then I don't see them beating out either Batch or Moore for a roster spot.

Dixon signed with the Steelers. Also read Gay only a 1 yr deal. BR reportedly is agreeable to restructure his contract.

Any chance the Steelers look at signing Brian Waters to a one year deal? I know he is not a long-term solution, but my guess he can still play circles around the guys we have.

  16. Just heard the interview this morning with Steelers GM Kevin Colbert on the Fan Morning Show and it sounded like the Steelers wanted Plaxico but only for a two-year deal that was good for him and the team. He also mentioned that the Steelers options are LT are J. Scott, T. Hills, M. Gilbert and possibly brining back Max Starks.

Gerry Dulac has said that the team will restructure 5 contracts to get the salary cap room that it needs. With Ben, Harrison and Keisel's agents all saying that they have agreed, could the other two veterans be Troy and Woodley on extensions. If they did all of the above and brough back G. Warren and M. Starks, then this would have to be a good offseason for this team post lockout.

The two other vets linked to restructuring that I read about were Ward and Smith.

Signing Woodley long term is the ticket, but perhaps they're waiting until Wed so Woodley can continue to practice. If he signed today, he'd have to stop all practicing until Thursday.

^ perhaps they are negotiating as this is a big deal. deals like that dont get done overnight

Dale - any word on signing Timmons long-term? Or are they just gonna wait and franchise him next year.

    surprise players to watch for:

    David Johnson
    Keenan Lewis
    rookie RB Batch
    Isaac Redman!

Emmanuel Sanders out at least 3 weeks from the off-season foot surgery that's not healing well. I don't think having bone marrow taken from your heel to inject into the injury site is a positive development.

Makes their pursuit of Burress more understandable.

hmm maybe we should sign Rany Moss

Dale - any way Pouncey is moved to left tackle?

  22. Ward said today that he restructured his deal last year and that he probably can't do it again - I think there is a rule about that.

I was wrong about Gay, it is a one-year deal.

    Kemo re-did his deal.
