The move came as a surprise since the special teams units had performed well under Everest, who took over for former coordinator Bob Ligashesky following a horrendous 2009 season in which the team allowed four kick returns for scores.
Everest will be replaced by Amos Jones, who has been the team's assistant special teams coach since 2007. Jones and head coach Mike Tomlin go way back, having been on the same coaching staff at the University of Cincinnati in 1999 and 2000.
“We are continually
evaluating our coaching staff and support staff, and we have decided to go in a
different direction with respect to the coaching of our special teams,” Tomlin said in a statement. “I want to thank Al for his
contributions and efforts, and I wish him well in the future.”
Any idea why?
ReplyDeleteFight? Drugs? Alcohol?
Something obviously happened behind the scenes for this to happen.
ReplyDeleteWow, special teams had improved so much, too. Wonder what happened.
ReplyDeletethis is a very curious move indeed and especially since they have improved. I think Jones gets the job by default also because it hard to find a coach now .
ReplyDeleteWasn't it unusual for the Steelers to have 2 ST coaches in the first place? Strikes me as just the head coach making room for his long time friend after getting him a few years of NFL ST OJT.
ReplyDeletec'mon dale, we gotta know what happened.
ReplyDeleteOh man there goes our shot for number 7!
ReplyDeleteJust kidding.
It's only conjecture at this point, but I know that Amos was definitely one of Tomlin's guys. If there was a conflict between Amos and Al, Tomlin would side with Amos.
