Here's why Patterson scares me

http://www.jsonline.com/sports/tennessees-patterson-with-plenty-of-talent-and-question-marks-rt9i5uj-203524771.html

If you don't read Bob McGinn's pre-draft stuff, you should. McGinn did a breakdown today on Cordarrelle Patterson and it brought out many of the issues that I have with the speedy wide receiver out of Tennessee.

He's a big-time boom-bust prospect and, at least in my opinion, that's not the kind of player the Steelers need to come out of this draft with.

If another team takes Patterson in the first round and he becomes a star, more power to them. But the Steelers can't afford to swing and miss this year - at least in my opinion.

  1. You don't feel the same re: Jarvis Jones?

  2. Both Jones and Patterson have issues; medical vs character respectively.

I just hope we grab a DL. If not then a WR would be my next hopeful choice. But the Steelers have found great picks after the 1st round with WRs so I'm thinking they can wait on a WR.

Jones = pressure. Pressure = good secondary play. Please draft jones!!!!!

Deandre Hopkins & his roommate Harrison the WR from Rutgers, destroyed their hotel room at the NFL combine after a hard night of partying, if he can't handle that what's going to happen when he gets his payday? Undeniable talent, but nonetheless raises some concerns of character issues with him as well there. Personally I think Justin Hunter in the second would be an outstanding value pick. He will be the receiver Limas Sweed never became. Freakish athleticism, I think his ceiling would be similar to AJ Green. Not as many character issues either as far as I know.

  5. I recently read an article quoting the Tennessee coaching staff as highly impressed with Patterson's work ethic, football study habits and team leadership. Which is on conflict with how he is deacribed in the article you reference. I don't know what's true and what's bunk. But much like the combine, we tend to fall in or out of love with too many things that don't matter. What matters most is the tape and when you watch Patterson on tape you see a home run hitter. Same goes for Austin yet both of these guys seem to be getting marginalized by the media as the draft nears.

I recall that Devin Hester had wonder wonderlic score that indicated he might be brain dead but the guy was a home run hitter and a game changer that had a huge impact for the bears. I think Patterson has even more upside than Hester both as a returner and a WR. Certainly he has some risk but he's put up the numbers and shown the physical ability to perform at an exceptional level. If he's there at 17 and your other options are Vacarro, Jones and D. Moore I think you have to give him some serious consideration.

    Eifert.

  7. Steve-O: Hester has been a "home run hitter" as a returner, but has not been the answer as a receiver. That's the risk with Patterson, that you can't get him the ball because of poor route running.

anyone check out the schedule yet. i only have one problem with it. the monday-thursday games, both on the road, to the browns and ravens respectively. i thought that was kinda crap for the league to do. then, upon reviewing every other AFC team's schedule, only the steelers and texans have back-to-back division games on the road in consecutive weeks. but, the texans is a thursday-monday deal which gives them extra rest. therefore, it's really only the steelers in the entire AFC that have that scenario. thanks roger.

sigh...yes, i know that. a sarcastic remark directed at the league as a whole. didn't realize i would have to spell that out.

  12. I think every team's fans are staring at the schedule and saying that their team got a raw deal. There are unfavorable things every year as part of almost every team's schedule, I see this as no more worthy of complaints than any other year.

  13. Dale,
I came across an ESPN video/story that also discusses the pluses and minuses of Cordarrelle. Sport Science shows the guy is off the charts gifted, take a look:http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/55356/sport-science-cordarrelle-patterson

  14. Hunter won't last until the second. Don't be surprised if he goes in the first.

  15. Maybe that is why that Steelers took Bray to Dinner.

  16. Arthur Brown in round one and I'm pleased.

Arthur Brown round 2 and I kneel before Colbert.

Keenan Allen in round 1 and I'm fine with it.

Keenan Allen in round 2 and I consider ourselves lucky.

Jonathan Hankerson round 3 would be a steal.

Ryan Swope in round 3 would be great too.

Please don't draft T'eo no matter what round. (even 5th I'm serious).

  17. Trade back and take Arthur Brown,

    or take Eifert at 17.

No other options, unless it's possible to get Brown at 49.

Steelers took Bray to dinner because they are very interested in drafting him. If he's there in the 4th-5th round then he will be the pick.

I saw every Tennessee game this year and I wouldn't draft him in the 6th round.

  20. Dale, if you're the Steelers and Gs Chance Warmack and J. Cooper are sitting there at no. 17, would you bite? Many are saying that they believe both will be All-Pros early in their careers and are plug and play ready to start from Day One. Isn't the draft about selecting impact players? I like the fact that Cooper can also play center though I like the pedigree of Warmack a lot more. If you are starting as a freshman at Alabama and excel at your position, and have played a prominent role in two National Championships, you're ready for the NFL. I just don't see K. Colbert taking Jarvis Jones. Besides the medical questions, the slow 4.9 40 time, the 20 reps at 225 lbs., modest size at 6'2, 245 lbs, and the spinal stenosis, Jones will turn 24years old during his rookie season. This goes against everything that K. Colbert has done during his tenure in Pittsburgh in selecting first rounders. I would really love for the Steelers to trade down in this first round and pick up an extra 3rd and select either WR C. Patterson or D. Hopkins as a WR. If they want to go pass rusher, then I still like Werner over Jones. Younger, no medical questions, better size and speed than Jones and still quite a bit of upside since he's only played football for 5 years. And as for C. Patterson, if he comes in as your no. 1 KR/PR and is still able to stretch the field for you in a pkg on 3rd downs, why isn't that first round value for this team? I've seen a few scouts say he is the best returner that they've seen come out since Devin Hester. If you are the Steelers, you have to consider it, especially if you can still get him after trading down a few spots and pick up that extra 3rd. Lastly, a part of me keeps going back to Warmack if he is there at pick no. 17. If you can select him at no. 17, plug him in at LG and let R. Foster be your swing tackle and K. Beachum be your swing C/G/T on game day, the Steelers would have its most talented offensive line since A. Faneca, M. Smith & J. Hartins were in their hey-days. Something to think about. And No, I haven't forgot about your CB/S Xavier Rhodes. I love big CBs/Ss that can run and make plays on the ball. K. Colbert can't afford to miss on this draft, particularly with the team's cap situation in the coming years. Thoughts?
