Steelers news, notes

Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown and running back Le'Veon Bell will be honored as the AFC co-offensive players of the year at the NFL 101 Awards in Kansas City next month.

It marks the first time in the 45 years of the award that it will be given to two players - let alone two players from the same team.

Brown and Bell will be the first Steelers to win the award since Kordell Stewart in 2001. Barry Foster also won the award in 1992.

@ The Steelers will likely name Jerry Olsavsky their inside linebackers coach and Joey Porter their outside linebackers coach in the next two days.

@ The Steelers have officially signed former CFL linebacker Shawn Lemon.

The 6-2, 250-pound Lemon, a former star at Akron, had 13 sacks and a CFL-record eight forced fumbles in 2014.

Lemon ran a 4.77 40-yard dash at his college pro day and did 26 reps of 225 but went undrafted.

With James Harrison, Jason Worilds and Arthur Moats all scheduled to become free agents, the Steelers needed some depth at outside linebacker. Lemon could provide some depth  with possible upside and was worth a roll of the dice.

@ I'm scheduled to sit down with Art Rooney II tomorrow - unless he has to reschedule. Have quite a few topics to touch on, including Ben Roethlisberger's contract, the state of the team and the LeBeau replacement.

One guy will work with the OLBs, the other with the ILBs. Since the positions have different duties, it's not unusual.

And both were actually already doing those duties, just working under Butler.

Glad to see the Steelers trying something different by signing this guy.

Totally agree add players at positions of need at this point in timw

They've signed other CFL guys. Stefan Logan in 2009 comes to mind.

And they have drafted Logan twice since then. Sorry, that's Chris Rainey & Dri Archer. One of the 3 gonna out run someone someday.

Dale,

Not that he would give you much information but it would be interesting to get Art II's take on the Patriot's recent cheating allegations and if he believe the Patriots cheated the Steelers out of a AFC championship. I remember Hines quoted as saying the Patriots knew all the Steeler's offensive calls.

Great Blog! I look forward to your analysis regarding the draft.

STeelers were in the running for Cameron Wake, as I recall, before the Dolphins snagged him. Not saying Lemon is in that category, but good football players can be found anywhere. Nice to see that the Steelers are looking everywhere. You have to in this day and age.
I am very interested to see what they do with BB's contract...I'd like to see them get it done sooner than later and save some money on the cap before the draft. I hope they will sign a few FA's..don't break the bank obviously..but we can't fix what's broke through the draft alone. And time is ticking on BEn's career.

I don't think Art 2.0 would comment on the Patriot's, not his style.

He will comment on ramping up the defense, but what else do you expect him to say from his meeting?

I like the lemon signing as well.some players just develop later in their careers.nice to see steelers exploring all options.

I'm very interested in howard jones development though.any word on how he progressed with a year on the practice. Has he bulked up and what are the chances he cracks the 53 next season.have any of the coaches mentioned him dale?
