Day 4 free agency

The Steelers signed nose tackle Cam Thomas to a two-year deal on Friday. The move could mean that Steve McLendon is slated to move to defensive end., though Thomas can also play end.

Thomas was one of two defensive linemen to visit the team on Friday in the wake of Al Woods signing with Tennessee and Ziggy Hood leaving for Jacksonville.

Thomas (6-4, 330) started 10 games for San Diego last season. He signed a two-year deal worth $4 million that included a $1 million signing bonus and a $1 million salary for 2014, putting his cap number at $1.5 million this season.

Buffalo's Alex Carrington was the other. There is no news on Carrington yet though he reportedly had a good visit.

Carrington isn't fully healed from the quad injury he suffered last season, but he checked out OK with the team's doctors

Nothing like a fresh start, eh anon 2:53....

This team have nothing at NT so someone to come in and compete in camp with a bit of experience can only be a good thing IMO

True true we needed more bodies. Let's just not act like this guy is even as good as Keisel, Hood or Woods.

Yeah, you're right. Those guys were so good the Steelers finished 8-8 and 21st in run defense last season.

It's not like they lost the Fearsome Freaking Foursome

Exactly Dale, these guys act like we lost some all pro players, Woods, Hood and a 36 year old Kiesel...are you kidding. At least we get a potential monster looking for a fresh start, worst case he is better than what we had. I am ecstatic to see the Steelers addressing the D as they have so far this off season.

I think people - myself included - got a little hopeful about Woods based on a couple of good late games last year and then were disappointed when he left. There's this imaginary Al Woods out there in future opponents' backfields dominating all over the place.

But yeah, Woods is probably interchangeable with Cam Thomas, realistically - a body on the D-line good enough to play in the league, which is what is needed at the moment. And the change of scenery helping is not impossible.

Imaginary Carrington is pretty awesome too, but probably more real-life if his injury's healed.

steelers d-line is officially a disaster.

teams might actually run the football against them this year. the ultimate of insults in today's nfl

Dale Lolley said...

They ran the ball against them last year, "the ultimate insult in the NFL."

And that is why they let the D linemen walk. If they were worth keeping they would have been kept. I am glad to se the whole thing get blown up, our d line is officially a disaster? Did you watch any games last year anon 6:27?

How much cap space do we have left at this point?

Bottom line is this guy has tons of potential when motivated. Im pretty sure if Mitchell cant motivate him it'll news for the league to stay away. At worst the deal is low cost with the possibility of a huge payoff imo.

I really Like Zumwalt or Borland for the LB spot but if we draft a Qb what a waste of a 4th round pick last year.Thomas was signed for Depth according to Bob Labriola We still need to add a starter quality DE .

Dale Lolley said...

At this point, they have about $4 million in cap space remaining.

How much cap space do they need to keep open for rookies?

Irrelevant. They got 8 me coming off boons in June. More than enough for the draft class

Auto correct sucks. 8m : books

Dale, could you comment on the interest and/or likelihood that the Steelers bring back Plaxico to compete at WR or Baron Batch to have someone with familiarity to the Steelers on the RB crew?

Dale Lolley said...

Cap space won't matter for the rookie class. They'll get plenty when Woodley comes off the books.
