Steelers reportedly sign Adams

The Steelers have reportedly signed offensive tackle Flozell Adams to a one-year contract.

No word on what position Adams will play, but the guess here is that he's put into the mix at RT - even though he's played LT throughout his career.

Adams has lost a step and has struggled with holding penalties on the left side. But he's still a solid run blocker and would seem better suited to play RT at this point in his career.

The Steelers, of course, have a void at RT due to the injury to Willie Colon.

It's a 2 year deal ...

Probably the best option available to them, such as it is, at present. Curious as to how much the contract is for. He was reportedly asking for quite a lot when they worked him out a month ago. I assume as camps approached his price tag was dropping daily.

If he's moved to the right side, perhaps the false starts will get cut in half....so he'll only get, say, one per game.

it's going to be funny if Adams plays LT and Starks RT. You know, I'm such an idiot and all that when I mentioned it weeks ago it was a joke but now seems like a real possibility.

A lot easier to move Starks to RT then it is for Adams, who I don't think ever played the right side.

Adams as the starting LT still isn't likely. He had a pretty bad year as a LT; Starks had a decent year. Starks has youth and experience in the system on his side too. Plus, I've read that Adams has a bit of a hearing problem in his right ear which could possibly be attenuated if he were to move to the right side. AND Adams is more of a run blocker and not a great pass blocker so having weaker pass rushers on the right would suit him better.

I'm not saying it's impossible, I just would be surprised.

thats all good and well but you're asking a 35 year old guy to play the opposite side. Maybe he can do it fine, but it seems like a lot to ask for a guy who has never played that position in his career.

I hope Adams can play the right side, the less moving guys around the better. I just think its probable he'll play LT.

Switching between Tackle spots is common. Many LT who get drafted start out on the right. Most backup Tackles are backups for either side. Adams might have to adjust for a few days learning to kick step with a different leg but it's definitely not a huge deal.

and the next article says Starks will stay at LT. So there it is, I'm a big idiot.

(still think it could possibly change)

Per Jim Wexell's twitter, Starks volunteered to move to RT, but Tomlin opted to keep him at LT and have Adams play RT.

I read somewhere that Adams played his rookie season at RT.

If a lineman can play LT, he can play RT. It's going from RT to LT that's the problem for most guys. If a guy has started for 10+ years at LT, he can play RT, provided he's healthy.
