Tuesday Tomlin

Safety Ryan Clark won't play this week after injuring his shoulder in thte fourth quarter against Tennessee. He'll be the only starter who won't play, though.

Mike Tomlin said today that Tyrone Carter would start in Clark's place, but that Anthony Smith would see some time at free safety as well.

© James Harrison (hip pointer) and Ben Roethlisberger (ankle) will be limited at practice early in the week, but are expected to play.

© The Steelers finally gave up on getting Marvel Smith back this season and placed him on IR Tuesday.

To replace him on the active roster, the team signed Jason Capizzi to its roster. Capizzi was on the practice squad of the St. Louis Rams.

© Tomlin refused to address whether he stood behind offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and took offense at the question.

It was a poor time to ask about Arians. The team is 11-4 and readying for the playoffs, not 4-11.

Dale, since I didn't hear all of Tomlin's press conf, how did he refuse to answer the question about Arians? Did he just dismiss it out of hand or otherwise tacitly back up Arians? Or did he just not comment?
It seems to me a no comment is not a good sign for BA.

He said it wasn't the time to talk about such things and wouldn't dignify it with a response.

Thanks, Dale. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, don't you think?

I'm not sure he could have endorsed Arians with a straight face.

How terrible was Santa at the press conference? That was uncomfortable. Tomlin is a no-nonsense kind of guy, and he clearly didn't enjoy it. The Trib is reporting that that'll be the last time DiFabio makes an appearance as Santa - thank god.

I don't remember him from years past. Has it always been that painful to watch?

If you didnt think his PA announcing awfulness could be topped, it was yesterday at that ridiculous Santa skit. Tomlin should have got up and left. DiFabio is the worst. Some people just don't get it.

Dale, what is the vibe internally about Arians performance? It seems like some of the players are fed up with the offensive philosophy and performance. Any feeling on how Colbert, Rooney, etc. feel about him? I realize we are 11-4, and our OL is not made up of Hall of Famers, but the D has basically carried us all year. Do you think Arians is back next year?

Dale, do you think Capizzi will make an impact at all in the Cleveland game? Also, do you see him making the team next season (i know its early). I was mainly wondering if you think they will get rid of Smith and Starks and then have Capizzi and draft picks as our tackles next season.

Don't you people realize that this is DiFabio's world and he is just kind enough to let the rest of us live in it? If he wants to take over a press conference, let him. It's his. The guy is a media GIANT. Doing the sports report for WJPA, public announcer for your Washington Wild Things. The man also perfectly harmonized "My Girl" with Rev. Jesse Jackson in an elevator. He should release that on CD. Number 1 in your hearts and number 1 on the music charts. Eat your heart out Michael Bolton.

I'm not going to bash DiFabio. He's a friend. Sometimes he gets a little carried away, but there are times when we all do. Such is life. If it means anything, Bill realizes he went too far with that one.

As for Capizzi, my answers are no and no. I don't see him making an impact in the Cleveland game and I don't see him being the only veteran left tackle in this roster next season.

There is a growing feeling around this team that it could make the Super Bowl, win it and the offensive coordinator could still be fired. That might be a first.

I don't like Arians' offensive philosophy, but the fact is if the head coach doesn't let the OC know what HIS approach is to offense, I can't really blame Arians entirely.
I doubt there's much difference among all the OCs in the NFL, they can all design different offenses.

If Tomlin wants a run-oriented offense then HE has to let HIS OC know that and HE needs to enforce HIS philosophy when the OC goes away from it.

Just look at the Giants. Is there a more pass-happy OC than Kevin Gilbride? Yet, Coughlin has told him the Giants will be a run-first team. That's a condition of his continued employment as OC. There is no reason Tomlin can impose the same restrictions on Arians. Then BA can decide if he wants to stay or leave.

Meant "can't impose..."

Well, Cowher showed Erhardt the door right after SBXXX.

Dale Lolley said...

Ron was pretty much ready to retire at that point.

Erhardt went immediately to the Jets OC job where he helped lure O'Donnell away. There were tampering charges. It was not an amicable parting.

So if DiFabio wasn't your friend, you would bash him?

Dale Lolley said...

He went to the Jets, but he was really past his prime. He was starting to slip and they didn't want to lose Chan Gailey, who had taken over some of the play calling.

Dale,

If Arians goes, and The Chiefs clean house, would Chan Gailey be a candidate for the OC position. I know it wouldn't be likely because Tomlin doesn't have any ties to Gailey.
