Cuts (as we find them)

Because they don't have to officially release the names until 4 p.m. Saturday, the Steelers aren't doing so. Their reasoning is that it allows them some wiggle-room to make trades.

But here's a list of who I've found that will be released.

Dallas Baker, Roy Lewis, Jeremy Parquet, Desmond Sherrod, Carey Davis, Isaac Redman, Bruce Davis, Anthony Madison, A.Q. Shipley, Scott Paxson, Sonny Harris, Jason Capizzi, Mike Reilly, Peter Czech, Justin Vincent, Tyler Grisham, Tom Korte, Steve McLendon, Andy Schantz and Brandon Williams

That's 20 of the 22 cuts they have to make. Again, these aren't official - yet.

If, for example, they can work out a trade for, say Travis Kirschke or Nick Eason, a guy like Sonny Harris could be back on the squad.

No way they keep both Johnson and McHugh, so one of them would be cut #21. Have to think one of the DBs (Burnett, Carter, Ratliff) would be #22.

If another team tries to claim someone the Steelers put on waivers, the Steelers would have the option of keeping that player by putting him on the 53-man roster, right?

Therefore, they're probably trying to see if Sonny Harris can clear waivers. If he does, they'll put him on the practice squad. If he doesn't, they'll boot Eason or Kirschke and add him.

McHugh could go to the DL, depending on how long his injury is going to keep him out.
Again, they're attempting to deal some guys. Keiwan Ratliff would be another trade possibility.

Do you think Cleveland would take Ratliff and a 2010 2nd-round pick for Joe Thomas?

Signed,

Idiot Yinzer

The Browns might do that if Ratliff had played for the Jets in the previous two seasons.

Bouchette reports Donovan Woods also cut, have to think he'd be a practice squad guy too.

The Steelers aren't dumb enough to let Sonny Harris join another team, are they? Unless they don't think he'll ever amount to anything.

Donovan Woods #21 and McHugh to the IR for #22. That's it.

My stomach turned when I saw Redman on the list. I rally hate thinking about loosing this kid.

Dale, Do you think they are trying to deal for an O. line guy?

Seems like pretty good decision making by the Steelers. They were smart enough to keep Bailey and Summers. And much thanks to Carey Davis for all he's done, but his time is up, and we need that roster spot.

The only name on that list I am really bummed about is Madison, but I suppose they feel like the young guys can fill in well enough on ST, in addition to actually playing defense.

Summers over Redman was the right move, but I do hope we can keep Isaac on the practice squad. Because you know somebody in that backfield is getting injured.

You mean Casey Hampton isn't on the cut list??

I would think, if anything, they are trying to deal for picks in 2010. And those picks would likely be late.
They're not looking to add more guys, only get something for their depth.

Don't get rid of Redman He's been doing so good he's been doing better than mendenhall.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Steelers make a move for a veteran backup OT. They've got Tony Hills as the swing tackle right now. No way they're feeling comfortable with him in that role. I know they could move Essex to tackle in the event of an injury, but then you disrupt two starting spots to try and fill one.

Not buying the Woods cut. Makes no sense, especially with Timmons dinged and likely to miss the opener. They won't go into that game that thin. Maybe Dulac/Bouchette got that tip from LaCanfora.

Woods pulled his hamstring against Carolina and maybe he was waived injured like Carey Davis.

Dale,

What do you think are the chances of a trade happening with the DL or other position to free up a spot for R. Harris?

How can they cut a young, promising 3-4 DE like Harris when Tomlin said one of his priorities the past couple of years was to find more of them for this team? Eason and Kirschke are nothing more than backups and both are in the last year of their contracts. I just don't understand it.

Steelers Place S. McHugh on IR according to the S. Brown of the Tribune-Review.

So, the roster is set (for now). Harris, Woods, and Redman are three guys they should find a way to hang on to.

Woods being cut is just plain stupid. Like the above poster said, with timmons being injured, we have a glaring lack of depth at ILB. Woods fits the positional flexibility role that Tomlin preaches.

Douchette is wrong on this one.

I agree Henry. Woods played very well at MLB and also on special teams. Dumb cut imo

Dale - do you think the Steelers will look into signing a vet tackle (heard Pashos and Tra Thomas are getting released)?

Woods hurt his hamstring. I don't think the Steelers wanted a backup taking a spot if he would miss time with a hamstring. Besides if he is truly hurt I doubt another team would take him and the Steelers can sign him back later.

Dale Lolley said...

With Woods and his sore hamstring, he was likely out this week. That makes Arnold Harrison the backup inside backer.

BoJangles said...

I've always liked Harrison anyway. His resilience has been a great story. Hopefully he can remain healthy and play a role in our success.

I like A. Harrison too, but I thought Woods outplayed him in the first 3 preseason games (heard he played well in the last one, but I haven't seen that one yet).

Viz-Burgh said...

I thought Woods had made the roster & that Bailey would be the one who didn't make it. Not sure if this was just an issue with the hamstring or not, but I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Woods re-signed during the season when he's healthy.

I'm also not convinced that this is the final roster. As I said before, I can definitely see the Steelers bringing in a vet OT. The thought of Tony Hills jumping in there in case of injury is a scary one.
