Last day of camp

Mike Tomlin held his final press conference of training camp 2011 and was much more interesting today than he was at his PC last week:

© Tomlin said Troy Polamalu and James Harrison will play Thursday against Philadelphia after sitting against Washington.

© The starters are expected to see 20 to 25 snaps.

© Tony Hills will get the start at RG, though at practice Wednesday, Doug Legursky lined up with first team at RG, while Chris Kemoeatu was at LG.

© Emmanuel Sanders, Cortez Allen, Crezdon Butler, Bryant McFadden, Ike Taylor, Chris Kemoeatu and Mario Harvey are out as of now. That list could be added to later.

© Tomlin did not discount having his kickers boot the ball shorter to allow for returns to get a look at his special teams coverage units.

© Tomlin also said he wants to get an extended look at Jonathan Dwyer in this game.

I talked to Dwyer at lunch. Said he's lost 15 pounds since he's been in camp.

© The Steelers were on the turf here at Saint Vincent College and Aaron Smith did not practice again. Tomlin said he has given some of the older guys days off when they are on the turf here to save their knees.

The Steelers wrapped up camp having had just five practices on grass because of heavy rains throughout camp.

I was surprised to hear that they were starting Hills, but I am not going to read too much into it. C. Scott seems to have more talent, and just because he missed a couple of blocks doesn't mean he won't be a good player. We'll see if Hills can handle Cullen Jenkins and the boys. This could be his last shot to show that he has starter potential.

Dale - do u think that Dwyer will make the team over Redman? Redman only has impressed me with the one run last preseason game, nothing else.

I had hopes for Butler, but he didn't play last game either right? If he doesn't play the 3rd he's probably headed to the practice squad. Same with Cortez

Patrick that is a ridiculous question. I literally laughed out loud.

Butler has to get on the field and stay healthy. He hasn't been able to do that yet.

Cortez the Killer has been MIA throughout camp. At this point, he's looking like a practice squad guy. They still like him, but haven't gotten to see enough of him.

Hills has a legit chance to start at RG. That spot is still wide open.

Dale - how has Curtis Brown looked?

cortez allen has no chance of making the team. I just hope there wasn't some other DB coach who loved him in the draft who would claim him off of waivers. he didn't get to practice much at the citadel, so if he can get healthy and spend a year on the PS it would do wonders

Patrick....really? Did you see his 3rd down catch & run in the divisional playoffs vs. the Ravens last year? Steelers would not have played against the Jets for the AFC title without that unimpressive little catch & run. Redman is your #2 running back, learn to love him, Dwyer will be 4th at best.

its not me, obviously. Dale why do you let blog be a joke with these people?

And Clay didn't try to quit.. He did was asked of him, he "got off the field"

Dale Lolley said...

Clay didn't show a lot of smarts by leaving the field and heading for the locker room. He then took his time coming back.

Patrick, if people can't tell that's not you, there's not a lot I can do about it. I know you actually have an account here and don't have to type your name in as a poster.

As for Brown, he made a couple of plays in the two-minute drill today. Should have intercepted one pass but knocked it down with one hand instead. The next ball, he intercepted – out of bounds.

He's got ability, but he's still raw.

so comments like "you're an idiot" and obvious fake tags with comments just to annoy are fair game?

Apparently only foul language is banned?

Dale Lolley said...

Just ignore them and they'll go away. You know you're a valued visitor here Patrick.

Thank you, Dale!

Didn't the FO/coaches draft Allen knowing he was a project and they wouldn't get much - if anything - out of him in his first season?

I always assumed his roster spot was safe because they always intended to redshirt him for at least a year.

If Cortez is put on the practice squad he'll be scooped up by another team in no time at all.

Dale, I just finished reading your interview for Behind the Steel Curtain. I was glad that you mentioned Chavis. He really stood out to me when I watched the Washington game. He may be undersized, but the guy seems to have a motor (comparable to the one that broadcaster's typically mention being within Jared Allen).

Then, I read in the comments section under your interview that Chavis was being worked as a TE in practice recently. Is that true? They switched his number and everything, according to the posters. Do they really have no faith in anyone beyond Miller and Johnson?

Anyway, if this is the way that the guy might be retained on the PS, then I hope it all works out. I'd like to see him develop. Who knows, he could be the next Brett Keisel. Although, "The Beard" WAS drafted.

They're not going to cut Cortez Allen. He's a 4th round pick at a position of great need, no way they expose him to waivers. He'll get a red-shirt season.

Dale, I think the Steelers should take another look at Thaddeus Gibson & kick the tires on Lendale White. Thoughts? I always thought an in-shape White would be a great fit for this offense. Thoughts?

Is Curtis Brown ready to contribute this year? He seems like more of a project than Cortez Allen. It will tough to carry 2 corners on the roster who cant contribute this year

btw - this site would be better without Patick...all of them....except the clown one maybe :)

pfft no thanks to Landale White. didn't he tear up his achilles last year? tough for a running back to recover from that especially a fat lazy one

Had hope for Sweed... Think the kid didn't have the confidence.. Wish him well..

Actually Curtis Brown was considered a more finished product than Allen. However, neither is challenging for anything yet.

We will have the same starting CB's to begin the season as last year...maybe later in the season one of the younger guys could challenge gay at nickel but that is about it.

i hope sweed gets a fresh start with another team.

dale, any potential last minute signings you hear rumors about?

Patrick said...

I'm hearing Steelers might sign Tiki Barber to replace Redman who has not impressed me yet
