Thursday with Tomlin

It appears that Marcus Gilbert, a second-round draft pick, will get the start at left tackle on Thursday against the Falcons.

Jonathan Scott is still hurting with a hyperextended knee and the Steelers want to take a long look at Tony Hills at right guard.

They'd also like to get Gilbert as much experience as possible heading into the regular season, especially after he missed most of the first week of training camp with a hamstring injury.

He'll get plenty of opportunity to play against Atlanta as the starters are expected to play into the third quarter.

© Tomlin ruled out cornerback Ike Taylor for Saturday's game, even though Taylor has resumed practicing.

© In addition to Scott, cornerbacks Cortez Allen, Bryant McFadden, wide receivers Jerricho Cotchery and Emmanuel Sanders and linebacker Mario Harvey are questionable to play.

© Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was at the Steelers facility on Thursday watching practice.

Here's hoping Tressel doesn't land in the Steelers organization.

Is there a reason we didn't resign Max Starks? Obviously he was making too much money coming into the season, but why not restructure and come back for cheap? We dropped him like a hot potato and nobody else wants him, I don't get it.. We won multiple Super Bowls with him at LT. My best guess is that he is not in game shape sort of like what happened to Essex. But I am a little concerned that we are just one injury to John Scott away from being stuck with a rookie LT all year. Yikes.

The comment from press was he was over 400 lbs

It seems like Starks is done. He would have signed with another team now. Neck surgery sucks?

He got very heavy after the neck surgery because he was unable to work out. Doesn't mean he won't ever be back, but as we saw with Essex, they didn't bring him back until he got in shape.

Dale, any word on what's keeping Flo away? If we were to get him signed, we could slide over Willie to RG. Also, any chance the coaching staff looks at Gilbert for guard?

They're only working Gilbert at tackle. One position at a time for the rookies.

No movement on Adams. And they like Colon at RT a lot.

I hope Flo comes back, even if at midseason. I don't care about his accolades at Dallas, but he deserves a ring for everything he did for us last year

We'll see Gilbert tomorrow, but I think he is viewed as the future at LT, not Scott. That could be as early as this season.

I thought Gilbert's preseason play at left tackle actually went well (overall) until he injured his knee. He may not start the season opener but I'd bet he's in the mix by mid-season or sooner if he shines with this opportunity.

Tressel would be a fantastic addition to the Steelers organization. He is an incredible teacher of football. Many don't know this but Tressel taught a class on football at OSU. I have several friends who coach that took his class....and said Tressel was an amazing teacher of the game.

Not gonna happen Hack

Never expected it to happen Dale...but I would be behind it 100%. Tressel is a great teacher.

I just wish we could draft CB's half as well as we draft WR's. Here's to hoping B-Mac can hold his own and Willie Gay stays off the hot seat! Ike will be Ike as usual but Keenan Lewis scares me... he seems to be one play away from breaking out or breaking down.

Anonymous,
We don't draft good CBs because the truth is they are few and far between. The Steelers always end up at the end of the first round and the good ones are ALWAYS gone by then. I couple of years ago when they wre drafting lower I really hoped Darelle Reavis would end up a Steeler but that didn't work out. linebackers and WRs are plentiful, but CBs (at least the noteworthy ones) are not.

Hack,
Where did you hear Tressel is a good teacher of football? I've read that scouts are always concerned about OSU players because they very rarely have a good understanding of the game. The line I've heard on Tressel is his teams win but the players are way behind for a major program. I'm not trying to dispute, just relating what I'd heard

Kyle....Tressel taught a class on football at OSU....it was open to all players....and I know many of the coaches in the area would take it....and all raved about not only his knowledge of the game, but his ability to teach it. It was not always an "advanced" class...but it was said he could teach one.

hack,
so you're saying college football players and high school coaches were raving about tressel's knowledge of football and abiilty to teach it?

any word on what the pros think?

Thought Gilbert showed good potential in the few plays I saw him at LT vs Philly. He made some good plays, like pancaking one defender, but also missed blocked a couple of times.

I remember Jon Kolb's debut at center vs Chi and John Jackson vs NO.
I think Gilbert did better in his first game than either of them.

Is Cotchery in front of Sanders and Brown or is it going to be a combination of them for the #3 WR? Can't help but like what Cotchery does for us in the middle of the field. His TD against Phily was Hines-esque, really like that pickup.

Sanders hasn't played yet so he is probably #5 on the depth chart at the moment

Antonio Brown is a beast

Mike Wallace is out #1, then I see it as Ward(2), Brown(3), Cotchery(4) but 2-4 getting almost equal playing time

We need better depth at wide reciever in my opinion

Anonymous said...

Better depth at WR? You ain't gonna get much better than those guys 1-5. They just all need to get healthy.

If/when Sanders ever gets back to 100%, that is "an embarrassment of riches" at the wideout position.

any update on Leftwich Dale? That looked awful and apparently he went directly to the hospital? Hope the guy is ok.

adamg said...

At his press conf after the game, Tomlin said Leftwich has a broken arm. If this is an uncomplicated break, then maybe it's the best outcome that could have happened.
