Practice squad set/Captains named

The Steelers set their 8-man practice squad on Monday. All eight are players who were with the team in training camp.

Signed were: TE Eugene Bright, OG Dorian Brooks, S Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith, WR Tyler Grisham, OT Kyle Jolly, DT Steve McLendon, FB Frank Summers and DE Doug Worthington.

In other news, the Steelers announced their four captains for the 2010 season. The only surprise here is tight end Heath Miller being named a captain for the first time.

He'll be joined by Hines Ward, James Farrior and Keyaron Fox.

Miller replaces Ben Roethlisberger as a captain.

Any word on where S. Harris ended up?

Interesting that all the captains who failed to act like responsible adults (BR, Reed, Harrison) over the past couple of years got the boot.

It seems to me that the Steelers are in a transitional phase. Most of their rookies are not in a position to contribute immediately and the veterans are mostly on the downhill (albieit still talented side). This leaves us with either of two options, go with the veterans ala Charlie Batch, Flozelle Adams, James Farrior etc... and play it safe or plug in some youngsters with huge upside and suffer through some growing pains. I suspect guys like Arians will lean towards the veterans because his job is on the line, while Dick LeBeau won't hesitate to use the youngsters if they have enough of an understanding of his defense.

I think it's going to be a season of lots of highs and lows. We have enough talent to make a run, but at this poin there's more promise than there is anything else. Once we get our offensive line help and another cornerback we should be well on our way towards another 5 year run of AFC Championships and Superbowl contenders.

In case youre curious- guess-timating we finish with the 16th pick in the 2011 draft:
1. DeAndre McDaniel, FS/SS Clemson 2. Matt Reynolds OT BYU 3. Rashad Carmichael CB Virginia Tech 4. Adrian Taylor DT/DE/NT Oklahoma 5. Stephen Schilling OG/OT Michigan 6.Charlie Gantt TE Michigan St. 7. Da'Rell Scott HB Maryland. and 2 UFAs- Henry Hynoski FB Pitt (bye bye Bruce) and Zach Frazer QB UConn. Yep, some think its early, but I struck gold 6 out of the 10 picks we had this year. This is an early version, but I think a solid one.

Hynoski will be drafted by someone, but it's waaaaaay too early to start talking draft.
