Starks placed on IR

Max Starks was placed on injured reserve this morning and will undergo surgery to repair a disc problem suffered in his neck in Monday night's game at Cincinnati.

To replace him on the roster, the Steelers activated rookie offensive tackle Chris Scott, who had been on the physically unable to perform list.

Scott, a fifth-round draft pick, suffered a foot injury prior to the opening of training camp.

I think the best line up might be:

Essex, Kemo, Pouncey, Foster, Adams

and possibly this:

Adams, Kemo, Pouncey, Essex, Foster

I'm probably wrong though and J. Scott will be in there somewhere.

agree with Patrick for the first time ever

They're not going to tear things up unless they need to, particularly this week with Kemoeatu unlikely to play.
Scott will be at LT, Legursky at LG.

BB get your running shoes on, here they come! BB has to get his act together quickly and quit throwing those ducks. Drop back one and fire. Is this in the playbook?

Wow, with Legursky and Scott on the left expect the Pats to send a lot of pressure there. Please let Arians have a good game plan with some quick throws in place to counteract this.

this is where it helps having mendy being a complete back and catching passes out of the backfield. #7 may need to lean on that more instead of running around with his head cut off.

dale, how is ziggy doing? are the coaches happy with his play so far?

thanks.

If the coaches would list someone other than Batch or Leftwich as the back up qb, then either could be the 3rd qb and the Steelers could dress an extra position player.

You don't have to list an emergency QB, if I'm not mistaken. But there's no reason not to.

Ziggy has played well. The run defense hasn't suffered at all.

dale - tell the steelers they can list me as emergency qb. problem solved

adamg I'm not sure I follow what you're saying. corect me if I'm wrong, but you mean they should list randle el as the 3rd qb? That would mean he can't come into the game until the 4th right?

I think they could list no one as the 3rd QB and let Leftwhich or Batch not dress and then if both Ben and the #2 went down, then El could play QB. That would work to dress an extra player and might actually be what you're saying.

I think this is the point, you get to dress a certain quantity of guys every Sunday. In addition, you may list 1 QB as the emergency QB. The only player who can be listed there is the #3 QB. You cannot play that person in any role is my understanding until either QBs 1 and 2 both get hurt or until the 4th Quarter. That means he can't be the punter or the placeholder or the punt returner, but only an emergency QB.

The third QB can enter the game before the fourth quarter, but if that happens, the No. 1 and No. 2 QBs cannot come back into the game.

adamg said...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the emergency/3rd qb is an extra (46th?) player. If so, not dressing either Batch or Lefty opens a slot for a non-QB position player.

A good article about third string QB's (from the discussion around Vick's role with the Eagles last year) http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/26/vick-and-the-third-quarterback-rule/.

The best quote (NFL rules):
If the third quarterback initially enters the game during the first three periods, the club’s other two quarterbacks become ineligible to participate and may not return at any time under any circumstances.

Also noteworthy: The two quarterbacks on the 45-player active list must be bona fide quarterbacks: a club is not permitted to designate as one of its two quarterbacks a player whose primary position is not quarterback.

So, no. Ben will be #1, Leftwich #2, Batch #3.

all adamg is saying is don't dress batch or leftwich because in the event of disaster El could play QB and we'd get.

but you don't get an extra player, because the 3rd qb is considered inactive in any event

I figured the NFL might have a rule like that because it's a big loophole that would otherwise be exploited. But, if it was me, I'd give it a try. ARE was a record-setting college QB. He played his whole life against guys who were bigger and taller. The only reason he's not an NFL QB today is because scouts and evaluators thought he was too short to play the position in the NFL.
