I'll be on KDKA radio with John Steigerwald Monday at 8:05 talking about the decline of Ben Roethlisberger. You can be Kordell Stewart's name will be mentioned once or twice.
Dale, on another note while at the game Sunday I noticed Sepulveda moving around pretty good. For a guy that just had his knee surgically repaired, he looks to be well on his way to a full recovery. Thoughts?
- Yes the Colts only had two sacks, but guess how many they had in their previous 3 games? Zero. And of course 1 of those sacks came on the last drive of the game when the Steelers needed to run a longer developing play after the holding penalty on Starks.
- The Redskins had only 10 sacks coming into the Steelers game and they got to Steeler quarterbacks 5 times. And while Roethlisberger did take 3 of those sacks, he also dropped back 7 more times than Leftwich (17 to 10).
- So the offensive line is a problem. Not to mention our lack of ability to run the ball. In 3rd and 2 or less, the Steelers have run the ball 11 times, converting 5 times. That's so bad, that we elect to throw the ball more often in those situations (14 passes).
- Ben isn't playing well because he's hurt, has lost his two top running backs and plays behind one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. What other qb would consistently play well under those circumstances.
The great Peyton Manning has had his share of troubles when he was recovering from knee injury, lost Addai and his offensive line was battered.
Jacksonville isn't doing too well this year after losing 4 of their offensive linemen this year.
Transplant Eli or Romo or any other qb into this offense and I doubt they perform consistently well.
- If Parker and/or Mendenhall can be healthy next year and if the offensive line is upgraded to where they are at least an average line, then we will see Ben go back to being a top 5 qb in this league. It's not rocket science. Until then, expect continued sporadic play.
Hey Dale: tell John Steigerwald I agree with him about Kordell. I noticed, too, in the Indie game that Ben rarely strayed from the pocket. that worked well, but he couldn't really make the big plays. I also thought that Tommy Maddox decline started when they told him to wait a little bit before throwing. His strength was in instant reaction. Bill Northrop

Sepulveda is recovering nicely. He'll be ready to go next season.
